{"id":73706,"date":"2022-10-03T15:30:41","date_gmt":"2022-10-03T20:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/casel.dev\/?p=73706"},"modified":"2022-10-03T15:31:03","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T20:31:03","slug":"casel-applauds-the-department-of-educations-actions-on-student-well-being","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casel.org\/casel-applauds-the-department-of-educations-actions-on-student-well-being\/","title":{"rendered":"CASEL Applauds the Department of Education\u2019s Actions on Student Well-Being"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On September 15, U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona\u2019s issued a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oese.ed.gov\/files\/2022\/09\/BSCA-Stronger-Connections-DCL_9.12_signed.pdf\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;to Chief State School Officers regarding the allocation of $1 billion in funding under the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) to school districts that demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based strategies that meet students\u2019 social and emotional well-being.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) applauds&nbsp;Secretary Cardona\u2019s three key recommendations for states: 1) implementing evidence-based strategies that meet students\u2019 social, emotional, physical, and mental well-being needs; 2) engaging students, families, educators, staff, and community organizations; and 3) designing and implementing policies that advance equity.&nbsp;This announcement comes after CASEL sent a letter encouraging the Department of Education to use social and emotional learning as an evidence-based strategy to promote school safety.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Statement from CASEL\u2019s President and CEO, Dr. Aaliyah A. Samuel:&nbsp;<\/strong><br><em>\u201cDecades of research has demonstrated how evidence-based, universal social and emotional learning can promote academic achievement, social and emotional skills, healthy behaviors, and lifelong outcomes in students. We\u2019re encouraged to see this action by the Department of Education.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CASEL recommends the following resources and activities for implementation of high-quality, evidence-based social and emotional learning, in keeping with the Secretary\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Implementing evidence-based strategies that meet students\u2019 social, emotional, physical, and mental well-being needs:&nbsp;<\/strong>CASEL encourages the use of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pg.casel.org\/\">CASEL\u2019s SEL Guide to Programs,<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;designed to help educators and school administrators select an&nbsp;evidence-based SEL curriculum that best meets the needs of their community.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\" start=\"2\"><li><strong>Engaging students, families, educators, staff, and community organizations:&nbsp;<\/strong>CASEL encourages states to prioritize LEAs that develop and strengthen family and youth partnerships through policies, systems, and supports. CASEL\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/systemic-social-and-emotional-learning-for-states\/?view=true\">State Theory of Action<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/drc.casel.org\/promote-sel-for-students\/family-and-community-partnerships\/?_gl=1*4kn4v4*_ga*MTU2Mzg4MTk1MS4xNjYxOTc5Mzg2*_ga_WV5CMTF83E*MTY2MzI3MzExOS4zNy4xLjE2NjMyNzQ1OTIuMC4wLjA.\">District Resource&nbsp;Center<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/schoolguide.casel.org\/focus-area-3\/family-partnerships\/?_gl=1*nie4ok*_ga*MTU2Mzg4MTk1MS4xNjYxOTc5Mzg2*_ga_WV5CMTF83E*MTY2MzI3MzExOS4zNy4xLjE2NjMyNzQ2NzguMC4wLjA.\">Guide to Schoolwide SEL<\/a>&nbsp;are resources that can be support local communities efforts to authentically engage with parents&nbsp;and caregivers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\" start=\"3\"><li><strong>Designing and implementing policies that advance equity<\/strong>:&nbsp;Recognizing that students and families may experience school safety and discipline policies in different ways, particularly within high needs communities, states should consider&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/sel-policy-brief-on-arp\/\">prioritizing funding for SEL<\/a>&nbsp;in support of authentic community engagement and as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/fundamentals-of-sel\/how-does-sel-support-educational-equity-and-excellence\/\">lever for equity<\/a>.
