The resolution was introduced by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National SEL Week was also recognized by President Joe Biden in a letter this week underscoring the importance of SEL to support the academic, social, emotional, and mental well-being of students. The Biden administration has also prioritized SEL in two signature legislative achievements &#8211; the American Rescue Plan Act and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNational SEL Week\u201d marks a new high point for the field of social and emotional learning, both in public awareness about the benefits of SEL and support for SEL as integral to a high quality education. This bipartisan resolution comes at a pivotal time with heightened needs around students\u2019 academic recovery and social and emotional development. Senators Collins and Durbin working across the aisle on this resolution represents the majority of parents, students, and educators who, regardless of political affiliation, believe that evidence-based SEL is foundational for the health and success of our nation\u2019s students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to declaring \u201cNational SEL Week,\u201d the U.S. Senate resolution also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Recognizes the role that social and emotional learning plays in promoting academic achievement, mental and behavioral health, and future career success for students;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Supports expanding access to SEL for students and educators; and&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Encourages the American people to advance SEL to support students, educators, families, and communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Statement from U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL)&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\u201cAs our nation emerges from the pandemic, we are facing a national mental health crisis, watching children take cover during school shootings, and seeing teachers burdened with burnout. We must focus on social and emotional learning to help students get back on track. That begins with creating welcoming school environments and providing teachers with the tools needed to help students develop life skills. This year, overwhelming support and demand for SEL have necessitated expanding the celebration from a single day into an entire week! \u201cNational SEL Week&#8221; culminated with the annual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/selday.org\/\">SEL Day<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday, March 10.
