The resolution was introduced by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Susan Collins (R-ME).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/?attachment_id=79268\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0also recognized \u201cNational SEL Week\u201d in a letter this week underscoring the importance of SEL to support the academic, social, emotional, and mental well-being of students that were a critical part of the Biden Administration\u2019s two signature legislative achievements\u2014the American Rescue Plan Act and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This second annual \u201cNational SEL Week\u201d comes at a critical time for students\u2019 academic recovery and social and emotional development. With COVID-relief funds ending, education leaders are increasingly seeking sound, evidence-based investments in students\u2019 learning and development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A robust body of evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of SEL on academic outcomes. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/srcd.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/cdev.13968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 meta-analysis<\/a>\u00a0led by Yale University reviewed more than 400 studies and found that students participating in SEL at school had higher \u201cschool functioning,\u201d including grades, test scores, attendance, homework completion, and engagement. The research further demonstrates that SEL creates better conditions for learning as it found students saw decreases in aggression and bullying, anxiety, stress, depression, suicidality;\u00a0 felt safer at schools, and reported higher levels of inclusion, connectedness and healthy relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Statement from U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn America, we are facing a national youth mental health crisis, with children facing trauma and significant stress at home, in the community, and in school settings.&nbsp;We must focus on social and emotional learning to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom. That begins with providing teachers with the tools needed to help students develop life skills.&nbsp;I\u2019m introducing this resolution to designate this week as National Social and Emotional Learning Week and raise awareness around the need to support students\u2019 social and emotional well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Statement from U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery child deserves a learning environment that is welcoming and enriching.
