{"id":80190,"date":"2024-10-11T12:29:27","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T17:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/casel.org\/?post_type=blogposts&#038;p=80190"},"modified":"2024-10-16T11:52:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T16:52:56","slug":"from-vision-to-reality-schoolwide-sel-at-a-california-elementary-school","status":"publish","type":"blogposts","link":"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/from-vision-to-reality-schoolwide-sel-at-a-california-elementary-school\/","title":{"rendered":"From Vision to Reality: Schoolwide SEL at a California Elementary School"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"key-points\"><strong>Key Points<\/strong><\/h2><a class=top href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A team from CASEL, along with a group of California SEL Fellows, visited an elementary school in Elk Grove, California, to learn more about how they integrate social and emotional learning (SEL) into education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SEL was deeply embedded throughout the school, including in interactions between students, school leaders, and teachers, environments designed to encourage a sense of belonging and positive relationships, and a palpable sense of community and support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hear how founding principal Dr. Jodi Boyle brought her vision of an SEL-infused school to life, including her advice for others interested in implementing schoolwide SEL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thanks to generous grant funding from the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/stuartfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Stuart Foundation<\/em><\/a>,<em> CASEL hosted two convenings of SEL leaders in California to provide in-person networking, learning, and collaboration. This past April, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/systemic-implementation\/sel-in-school-districts\/sel-fellows-academy\/#thomas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Katy Thomas<\/em><\/a><em>, Program Specialist for Social Emotional Learning for Elk Grove Unified School District, hosted one of these convenings for both district and regional leaders from Northern California to join a two-day gathering including school visits and deep conversation focused on shared opportunities.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katy, an alumni of CASEL\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/systemic-implementation\/sel-in-school-districts\/sel-fellows-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEL Fellows Academy<\/a>, arranged for us to visit Miwok Village Elementary School (MVES), which serves over 1,000 students from Pre-K to sixth grade, to learn about their social and emotional learning (SEL) practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sel-at-miwok-village-elementary-school\"><strong>SEL at Miwok Village Elementary School<\/strong><\/h2><a class=top href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>As we walked through hallways and classrooms, the infusion of SEL into every aspect of the school was palpable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We saw student projects and artwork throughout the school, including depictions of the Grizzly mascot and the values \u201ccourageous, strong, and wise.\u201d On the playground, in classroom spaces, and in common areas, we saw posters with sentence frames for restorative language children can use to repair conflicts (\u201cI feel ___ when you ___ because I would like ____\u201d), along with inviting spaces intentionally designed for students to have those conversations and engage in personal reflection. When we spoke with school leaders, teachers, and students, they shared how they feel connected, supported, and joyful at school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers spoke about the way they are supported by school leadership and the many ways they strive to support students, including setting classroom norms together and holding regular class meetings. They shared how, through SEL, they have learned strategies to solve problems, resolve conflicts, and manage emotions and stress. One student said, \u201cSEL really does work. She shared with us some of her key strategies for bringing that vision to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Setting Expectations<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the school prepared to open, Boyle set the expectation that SEL would be a core component. She shared with both staff and families, \u201cThis is who we are and what we are going to do. This is what is needed, not only for our students, but for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She held monthly Q&amp;A meetings on Zoom and started each meeting with two slides: the <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/fundamentals-of-sel\/what-is-the-casel-framework\/\">CASEL framework<\/a> and Maslow\u2019s hierarchy of needs. This was an opportunity for staff, families, and community leaders to engage in a dialogue about what a school designed with SEL as central to&nbsp; its vision could look like. Boyle used personal examples from her own life (\u201cSelf-management is sometimes a struggle for me\u201d) and engaged participants in sharing if there were needs that wouldn&#8217;t be met in this kind of educational environment and how she could help meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the planning process, she kept them up-to-date on the district\u2019s progress with the school\u2019s opening and where they as a community were heading. She helped them stay focused on the mission and vision for the school and how SEL would be central to the work they were doing. This approach created collaboration, buy-in, and opportunities to learn about SEL from the earliest days of opening the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Adult SEL<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adult SEL was a priority for Boyle from the beginning. She explained, \u201cThe adult piece is essential. It\u2019s impossible for us to be able to teach social and emotional skills if we don\u2019t have them for ourselves first.\u201d She also recognized that for teachers to thrive, a supportive, collaborative culture was a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignfull has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center is-style-default\" style=\"grid-template-columns: auto 56%;\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: left;\">She worked to build strong foundational knowledge of SEL and the competencies, making sure staff knew the CASEL framework and had a shared language for talking about SEL. At these meetings, too, she opened with the CASEL framework and Maslow\u2019s hierarchy, guiding teachers through a check-in and asking how she could better support them. She also put this promise of support into practice. For example, it was a regular part of her leadership practice to step in to teach a class if a teacher needed to have a private conversation with a student who was struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Connecting With Families and the Community<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After MVES opened, Boyle continued monthly Zoom Q&amp;A calls with families and the community. The tribal organization was involved in the school\u2019s opening ceremony, designing murals celebrating the Miwok tribe, and in the school site\u2019s landscaping and how to care for it in a way that honors the elders and members of the tribe. Boyle said, \u201cWe wanted to make sure that it\u2019s not just artifacts of \u2018what used to be\u2019 or a museum; this is an active tribe and we want to recognize and celebrate that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"advice-for-others-on-implementing-schoolwide-sel\"><strong>Advice for Others on Implementing Schoolwide SEL<\/strong><\/h2><a class=top href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Boyle led MVES to become the district\u2019s top performing school in both academic outcomes and SEL survey data for adults and students. Her top two pieces of advice for other school leaders interested in implementing schoolwide SEL are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prioritize checking in with staff consistently.<\/strong> \u201cEveryone who works in education is <em>busy<\/em>, and it\u2019s easy to have regular check-ins and conversations with staff fall away. Prioritize that and don\u2019t be afraid to ask those questions. \u2018What do you need to be successful in this? How can I support you in this?\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Be willing to be vulnerable.<\/strong> \u201cAnything I\u2019m going to expect of others, I have to expect in myself as well. There is vulnerability in that, in being able to acknowledge this is an area of weakness for me, or an area where I want to continue growing. I can\u2019t walk in like, \u2018I\u2019ve never done anything wrong.\u2019 You need to be able to own both your successes and your mistakes. Know what you ultimately want to achieve and how you\u2019re going to bring that forth in others.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This piece of advice reminds Boyle of one of her favorite stories to share: a time when a first grade student\u2019s parent drove over some cones to reach a parking space in a closed parking lot. Moments later, the parent rolled down his window and said, \u201cI need to apologize to you because my son just told me that was not very courageous, strong, or wise. When you own it and look to repair and make a change, that\u2019s how you grow as a human.
